Panama has a service based economy. Seventy percent of the country's revenue is based on service offerings. And much of that revenue is based on law firms and other professionals who provide legal services to international clients.

In short, there are a lot of law firms. And given the number of law firms, there is a great deal of competition for offshore business.

While a close look at the service offerings from a wide range of firms actually finds the pricing quite close, the advertising of some of these firms take on the air of the "degree mills" of some of the online "universities" in the U.S.

Comparative shopping finds most of them within a few hundred dollars of each other. And while one should always be judicious with the spending of their hard earned money, establishing an offshore foundation, corporation or bank account with the "cheapest" law firm in Panama can be "penny wise and pound foolish".

The firms that we have selected to do business with are priced in mid-range. They are not the cheapest and they are not the most expensive.

If you use our firm to facilitate your offshore transactions, we have a flat fee of $750.

This is in addition to the fees you will pay to the law firm. While fees will vary depending on services you need and want, typically, a corporation runs around $1200 and a foundation around $1800. In addition to the legal structure, this includes fees for the law firm to act as the registered agent, the first annual $300 flat fee to the government and the fees for nominee directors of the entity. There are additional fees if you want the law firm to help you set up a bank account or a brokerage account or precious metals account. These run into the hundreds of dollars, depending on what you want done.

As an example, a corporation, with a bank account would run $2,050. A foundation with a precious metals account would run $2300. When you include our fees, total expenditures for a typical set up as described here would run about  a bit more or less than $3,000.

The question is a simple one, is it worth an extra $750 to work with someone who:

• Who has been a senior credit officer with two U.S. banks and can read the financial statements of any bank that you might do business with in Panama.
• Who has overseen the assets and investments of some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood.
• Who spent hundreds of hours, researching Panamanian law firms and then flew to Panama and interviewed several top firms in order to look these lawyers in the eye and find the best one for his clients. A firm that is ethical, responsible and competent.

As noted elsewhere on this website, I learned many things in Panama, but most importantly I learned that as you cannot tell a book by its cover, you cannot tell a law firm by its website. Some of the firms that had the most attractive and informative websites, had attorneys that, during face to face interviews, suggested unethical or irresponsible strategies.

Others were extremely professional and displayed sophisticated, in depth knowledge about offshore asset protection and privacy strategies. These are the firms that we have chosen to work with and to whom we are referring our clients.

You can get an offshore corporation or foundation for less, but these are your assets we are talking about and you should want to ensure that you are dealing with trsuted professionals who not only know the law, but are there for you when have questions or need something done. not boiler plate corporation mills.
